USA-Projekt 2007
About 70 pupils from the Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium Dortmund/Germany are looking forward to flying to the USA in September 2007. In Frankfort/Kentucky, they will perform the musical Amadeus, which was arranged by their teacher Matthias Korten. The musical's plot is based on a film of the same name (USA, 1984) by the Czech producer Milos Forman, which in turn refers to the play Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. The musical combines insights in Mozart's biography and music with modern influences, deriving its wit and humour from deliberate anachronisms and an unusual mix of different music styles. This conception makes it possible to put a song by, let's say, Genesis next to Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik and to present life in 18th-century Vienna as well as contemporary point of views.
Although this will be the second time that the pupils will perform Amadeus (the musical had its premiere on summer 2006), this project is a new challenge and a special chance - a chance not only for giving a concert abroad but also for intercultural learning: The pupils, being accomodated in families, will get an impression of everyday life in the USA while they bring something of our European culture with them - not only Mozart but also their opinions, their way of life. The whole trip will certainly turn out to be a fruitful exchange, so that the musical - which itself extends across different times and cultures - gets a symbol of intercultural learning.
